"My time at UPMC Altoona was instrumental in preparing me for a Sports Medicine Fellowship. The hands-on experience I gained using Dr. Phillips' point-of-care MSK ultrasound curriculum was incredibly valuable and greatly contributed to my current success. Additionally, I had the privilege of covering all Penn Cambria home football games throughout their regular and postseason. I'm confident that without the comprehensive skills I developed at UPMC Altoona, I'd be at a considerable disadvantage compared to my current group of fellows." -Tyler Narsingh, MD, Chief Resident, Class of 2025
In combination with the orthopedics rotation, trainees may gain further experience with local high school teams, college teams, and teams at the Mario Lemieux sports complex in Pittsburgh. Core faculty member, Dr. Phillips, holds a weekly outpatient musculoskeletal clinic focused on advanced training and care for MSK patients. Services at this clinic include small and large joint injections and specialized point-of-care ultrasound diagnostics. Trainees also are able to provide these services to patients in the general family medicine clinic. POC ultrasound is used in multiple rotations including continuity outpatient clinic, orthopedics, sports medicine, obstetrics, and ICU for evaluations, guided treatments, fetal assessment, procedures, and line placement. Faculty are collaborating with local specialists to create additional curriculum that integrates POCUS into cardiac and emergency care
