Lifestyle medicine helps to address the root causes of much of the chronic disease that we see in our patients. When used alongside evidence-based medical therapies, we can achieve improved well-being in our patients, and it makes practicing family medicine even more rewarding.
Lifestyle medicine focuses on 6 key components to prevent and treat chronic disease:
- Healthful eating
- Increasing physical activity
- Developing strategies to manage stress
- Avoiding risky substances
- Improving sleep
Forming and maintaining meaningful relationships.
Our Lifestyle Medicine Residency Curriculum started in 2021, and we had our first graduate from the
curriculum in 2023. Completing the requirements of this curriculum allows residents to become board-certified by the American Board of Lifestyle Medicine. This is a unique opportunity to augment our residents’ training in managing their patients with chronic medical conditions, and of course, it also helps our patients!
