Second Year

 

Altoona Family Physicians Inpatient Medicine Service - 1 month

  • One to two senior residents and three Interns
  • Supervise the interns
  • Daily teaching and interdisciplinary rounds
  • Run codes and rapid responses
  • Perform admissions

Dermatology - 1 month

  • Work closely with three local dermatologists
  • Perform full skin exams and a variety of skin procedures
  • Assist with Moh’s surgery

Geriatrics - 1 month

  • Rotate with the palliative medicine service in the inpatient and outpatient settings
  • Work at local skilled nursing facilities

Gynecology -  1 month

  • Work with our community gynecologists
  • Staff the Women’s Health and Wellness Center
  • Outpatient and surgical experience

ICU - 1 month

  • Includes Surgical/Trauma ICU, Cardiothoracic ICU, Medical ICU, and a Neurological ICU
  • Perform procedures such as intubation, central line placement, arterial line placement, chest tube insertion, foley catheterization, and others
  • Work closely with intensivists and participate in daily interdisciplinary rounds

Night Float -  6 weeks

  • Supervise the intern on all services
  • Perform admissions
  • Run codes and rapid responses

Obstetrics -  1 month

  • Divided into alternating shifts of inpatient Labor and Delivery and outpatient responsibilities at the Pregnancy Care Center and Pregnancy Recovery Center
  • First assist on cesarean deliveries
  • AFP delivers 600 to 700 babies per year

Orthopedics - 1 month

  • Work with two local orthopedic groups
  • Perform joint injections and musculoskeletal focused physical exams
  • Able to work with Altoona Curve (AA affiliate of Pittsburgh Pirates)
  • Work with family physicians who have completed sports medicine fellowships
  • Work in a dedicated musculoskeletal clinic in our family medicine office to learn point-of-care ultrasound

Pediatrics - 1 month

  • One senior resident and one to two interns
  • Typically coordinate care for 10 to 14 pediatric patients on service
  • Admit all pediatric patients
  • See pediatric patients in outpatient clinics and attend pediatric cardiology clinic
  • Daily Teaching from local pediatricians
  • Perform newborn exams
  • Supervise intern
  • Perform circumcisions

Practice Management - 1 month

  • Work with office managers and coding experts at two community family medicine offices
  • Perform a chart audit on 25 of your charts
  • Work closely with a practice management faculty member

Elective - 6 weeks

  • Can choose from a wide variety of electives offered at UPMC Altoona as well as throughout the entire UPMC system
  • Can arrange international electives
