Obstetrics

"Obstetrics "“Collaborating closely with both FMOBs and OB/GYNs at UPMC Altoona throughout my training allowed me to gain experience with OB triage, labor management, routine vaginal delivery and repairs, as well as valuable experience assisting on cesarean sections. All of this allowed me to not only practice low risk OB straight out of residency but al excel in a high flow surgical OB fellowship that led me to my current practice as a full spectrum surgical FMOB” -Hannah Economos DO, 2021 graduate

Program Strength

We have a number of family medicine faculty who deliver babies and 24/7 OB back up support in the hospital for emergencies. Residents work with all attending physicians and midwives, helping to deliver many of the 1600 babies born annually at UPMC Altoona.

Graduates perform on average 25 to 100 deliveries, depending on their interest level. All residents manage five continuity cases in their own practice and many more in the Pregnancy Care Clinic.

We do not confine OB to specific months—family medicine is diverse, and any day could involve delivering a baby or assisting in newborn resuscitation.

Proven Excellence

Our graduates have a strong record of delivering babies, performing C-sections, and securing OB fellowships. During their training, residents can opt for additional OB electives either here or at other locations. Some even pursue ICCs with OB, including time with lactation support and maternal-fetal medicine specialists.

Comprehensive Training

We understand that not everyone loves OB, but the training we provide is invaluable. Residents learn to manage pain, make difficult decisions, handle emergencies, and multitask in the clinical setting. Upon graduation, trainees will not be intimidated by pregnant women or breastfeeding mothers.
