Third Year

  • Altoona Family Physicians Inpatient Medicine Service -  1 month
    • One to two senior residents and three Interns
    • Supervise the interns and second-year resident
    • Daily teaching and interdisciplinary rounds
    • Run codes
    • Perform admissions
  • Emergency Medicine- 1 month
    • Work with the attendings in the ED for triage and disposition of patients
    • Level II Trauma Center, responsible for airway management on trauma alerts
    • Work a variety of shifts
  • ENT/Ophthalmology/Urology- 1 month
    • Work with local specialists in each of these areas in inpatient and outpatient settings
  • Geriatrics- 1 month
    • Rotate with the palliative medicine inpatient consult service
    • Work at local skilled nursing facilities
  • Gynecology- 2 weeks
  • Night Float- 2 weeks
    • Supervise the intern and second-year resident on all services
    • Perform admissions
    • Run codes
  • Orthopedics- 1 month
    • Work with three local orthopedic groups
    • Perform joint injections, musculoskeletal focused physical exams
    • Able to work with Altoona Curve (AA affiliate of Pittsburgh Pirates)
    • Work with family physicians who have completed sports medicine fellowships
  • Pediatrics- 1 month
    • One senior resident and one to two interns
    • Typically coordinate care for three to six pediatric patients on service
    • Admit all pediatric patients
    • See pediatric patients in outpatient clinics and attend pediatric cardiology clinic
    • Daily Teaching from local pediatricians
    • Perform newborn exams
    • Supervise intern
    • Perform circumcisions
  • Practice Management- 1 month
    • Work with office managers at two sites as well as coding experts
    • Perform a chart audit on 25 of your charts
    • Work close with practice management faculty member
  • Rural- 1 month
    • Spend time seeing patients at our rural outpatient office in Williamsburg
    • Transitional Care Medicine- 1 month
    • Two two-week blocks
    • Work with inpatient medicine team and night float to allow for minimal disruption during transitional times
  • Elective- 2 months
    • Can choose from a wide variety of electives offered at UPMC Altoona as well as throughout the entire UPMC system
    • Can arrange international electives
